Start with the head. Ask for a photo of the crown lit from a low angle to show sky marks and dents; Today's Golfer warns sky marks can mean a weakened crown. Check the face straight on for cracks or dents, and the sole for cracks around the weight ports. Ask whether the head rattles: the Rules' damaged-club local rule treats a loose part inside the head as significant damage. Confirm the adjustable sleeve matches the head's brand, note which setting it is in, and ask whether the wrench is included. Read the shaft label for model, weight and flex, and look for splintering on graphite near the sleeve. Finally, make sure the head variant, such as Max, LS, SFT or HD, suits your miss.
