The 2019 TaylorMade P790 is the second generation of TaylorMade's hollow-body players-distance iron. Like the 2017 original, it combines a forged 4140 steel face with a carbon steel body, a thru-slot speed pocket in the sole, tungsten weighting and SpeedFoam injected behind the face to support it and damp sound. TaylorMade's 2019 changes were a face about 7 percent thinner, progressive inverted cone technology on the face, roughly 15 percent more tungsten to lower the center of gravity, less offset in the long irons, shorter blade lengths in the short irons and a narrower topline look at address. It went on sale in September 2019 and was replaced in September 2021 by the third generation, which switched to the lighter SpeedFoam Air. It suits golfers who want a clean, compact look with strong lofts and more forgiveness than a forged cavity back. For a used buyer, the catch is that the 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 P790s share the name and similar styling, and many listings leave the year off, so confirm the generation from the shaft and the seller's photos before you compare it with other sets.
